Dr. Melinda Boone announced her resignation as superintendent of the Worcester Public Schools (WPS) on October 8, 2015, with an effective date of November 30. In December 2015, she took over as Superintendent of Norfolk, Virginia. Marcos Rodrigues, South High Principal Maureen Binienda, Mary Meade Montague, or Sheila Harrity were all supposed to fill the vacancy in Worcester after the transfer (who eventually left the district to become a superintendent of a regional school district). It was speculated that this vacancy would trigger political strife among the city’s top officials. For example, the mayor (Joseph Petty), who is also the chair of the school committee, decided to fill the vacancy with someone he wanted. He made his decision without consulting the other members of the school committee, which enraged many. [requires citation]

Dr. Rodrigues began his career as a substitute teacher, and worked as a paraprofessional before joining Dr. Boone’s leadership team after receiving his doctorate.
