John Winthrop, Jr. settles Agawam (Ipswich) in 1633. The “Dame School” is founded in the colonies, and it is attended by the towns’ most prominent people who did not attend grammar schools. In this first crucial step toward education, Goodwife Collins devotes more than 30 years to teaching.
1651: The Feoffees of the Grammar School, a grammar school founded and endowed by the Feoffees of the Grammar School, is created and endowed. According to another source, Mr. Robert Paine designed the schoolhouse, which was completed in 1653 and stood near the corner of County Road and Linden Street, facing the green, for a half-century.
Since there was a need for a new schoolhouse and a new Town Hall in 1704 (due to population growth), a Town Hall with a schoolhouse underneath it was constructed on Town Hill. A new schoolhouse was constructed near the Town House in 1784, on the small triangular plot in front of the current Methodist Church. To the right of the church, this woodcut portrays the second Ipswich Town House and Court. This was the site of the grammar school until 1794. The old courthouse was relocated from the North Green to the corner of Market Street and Depot Square in 1854, becoming the first “Damon Block.”

With a third and fifth grader, we recently relocated to Ipswich. Winthrop has been incredible. My children were made to feel at ease. This year, one student will be able to participate on a hybrid basis, while the other will be attending from home. If they need assistance with an assignment or with their feelings on a particularly trying day, all students receive one-on-one treatment.
