Winslow homer summer night
Winslow homer in his art – john wilmerding
TEDESCHI: As a curator of prints and drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago, I suggested a Homer exhibition and catalog based on our extensive watercolor collection, which would put the Homer watercolors in their proper sense. In 2008, this meant curating a display that included a variety of similar works from various institutions.
TEDESCHI: What I admire most about Homer is his unwavering commitment to capturing the atmosphere of a place or a scene. Not in a photographic realism sense, but in terms of evoking the mood or character of a scene, whether that means evoking the way a breeze cools as it blows over the water as the sun sets, or the humidity that rises from the jungle’s lush vegetation. He evokes such intense feelings of place in his work that the spectator feels as if they are there, in it.
TEDESCHI: One of the reasons I think this picture is so successful, and one of the reasons I love Homer in general, is that it evokes elements that he couldn’t possibly paint into the picture, such as sound. On a porch, two young women are dancing. That implies that there is most likely music playing. In reality, the film was originally titled “Buffalo Gals,” after the hit song. So, with that title in mind and the women dancing, you might almost start singing that song and the lines “Buffalo gals, won’t you come out tonight, and we’ll dance by the light of the moon?” to yourself. A silhouetted group of people appears to be mesmerized by the sound of crashing waves and the light flickering across the water’s surface to the right of the frame. The sound of churning and splashing is conjured up by Homer. You can feel the spray and the cool wind as it sweeps over the moonlit sea.

Winslow Homer is arguably the most significant painter of nineteenth-century American art, an original and creative artist with a special talent for seascapes, such as “The Gulf Stream” (1899, Metropolitan Museum of Art), “Breezing Up (A Fair Wind)” (1873–76, National Gallery of Art, Washington), and “Breezing Up (A Fair Wind)” (1873–76, National Gallery of Art, Washington).
One of Homer’s most well-known works is “Summer Night.” The painting captures the beauty and wonder of a summer night in a stunning nocturnal scene. Although the brushstrokes are almost impressionist in nature, this work is considered one of the first masterpieces of American painting, paving the way for later artists such as George Bellows and Edward Hopper.

English: Through a keen sense of poetry and mystery, this nocturnal scene by the sea transcends observed reality. Although the ghostly silhouettes of two women dance on the beach, the light and shadow effects distort shapes. Although it may have been inspired by Courbet’s Waves, Homer’s lyricism tinged with mysticism contributed to the creation of a uniquely American sense of nature.
