Throughout the learning process, learners constantly show what they “can do” in each style and at each sub-level, in a variety of situations. Learners can be at various levels for various modes (interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational) or abilities (reading, listening, writing, speaking, signing).
It is not enough for learners to demonstrate success in a single situation; the metrics and examples at each sublevel show how learners can demonstrate skills in each mode of communication using a variety of facts.
Can-Do Statements explain what students can do on their own at each sublevel and help them progress to the next level. In order to provide independent control of certain skills and functions at higher sublevels, higher level skills and functions (e.g., using timeframes, knowing complex texts) must be implemented and built upon at lower sublevels.
The descriptors indicate the skills and functions that can be performed with full control at that sublevel; the Can-Do Statements do not show what to learn or teach at each sublevel. At all levels and sublevels, learners can work with authentic texts and real-life situations, and set goals on how to advance to the next higher level.

This would be common in cases where a List is made up of a Condition and a set of observations, each of which is distinguished by its name – the condition has no name, so it is regarded as a null in the discriminator set.
