One-fourth to one-half of parents of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) suffer from the disorder themselves, complicating the delivery of evidence-based clinical and pharmacological therapies for children with ADHD. We review the literature in this article to see whether there is a connection between parent ADHD and the results of behavioral and pharmacological treatments for children with ADHD. We also look at studies that have used parent ADHD treatment (either alone or in conjunction with child treatment) to improve parenting and child outcomes. Finally, with the goal of furthering science and informing clinical care for these families, we make recommendations for future studies on the relationship between parent ADHD and evidence-based treatment outcomes for their children.
