“I have a good idea for when you meet someone from another religion who wants to argue about God. My suggestion is that you pay attention to what this man says about God. Never disagree with him about God. ‘I agree with you,’ is the best thing to say. After that, you go home and pray whatever you want. This is my suggestion for people to be at peace with religion.”
“If man is to live, he must learn to appreciate the fundamental differences that exist between men and cultures. He will learn that variations in ideas and behaviors are a joy, a part of life’s thrilling diversity, rather than something to be afraid of.”
“Cultural inferiority is often accompanied by moral assurance. The more uncivilized a person is, the more certain he is that he knows exactly what is right and wrong. All human advancement, including moral progress, has been the result of men who questioned existing moral principles rather than men who cheered them on and sought to implement them. In this, as in all other fields, the genuinely civilized man is still cynical and tolerant. His community is built on the premise of “I’m not sure.”
