To commemorate the morning show’s switch to Rockefeller Center’s Studio 1A in 1994, the “Today” show aired a montage of special moments from the past 25 years on Thursday.
The montage was hosted by Savannah Guthrie, and viewers were treated to clips from previous episodes featuring everyone from Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric to Hoda Kotb. Al Roker, Carson Daly, and Craig Melvin recalled how Studio 1A’s large window and proximity to Rockefeller Plaza allowed the show’s hosts to engage with the crowds outside in a fun and entertaining manner.
However, one notable figure was missing from the montage: former host Matt Lauer. He co-hosted “Today” for 20 of those 25 years before being shot in November 2017 after several women accused him of sexual assault.

Matt Lauer, the former host of the Today show, has re-listed his Hamptons home, Strongheart Manor, for $43.99 million, almost three years after he was fired for “inappropriate sexual conduct,” according to NBC News chairman Andy Lack.
The 6.3-acre gated estate, which Lauer bought from actor Richard Gerein in 2016, was advertised for sale in 2019, presumably as part of his divorce settlement with ex-wife Annette Roque. The asking price for the 12-bedroom, 12-bathroom home was almost identical at the time: $44 million. The 14,000 square foot property includes a restored main house built in 1902, two guest houses, a 60-foot heated pool, basketball court, gym, and art studio, according to the new listing. Lauer reportedly spent his days after being fired from the Today show in November 2017 holed up in his now-for-sale Hamptons home, where he “focused on family.”
Rockapella – where in the world is matt lauer?
There’s a lot of talk about how these sexual assault scandals and accusations are a global, watershed cultural moment for us.

Unfortunately, I agree with this sentiment and will go even further. I personally believe we are living in a horrific, never-ending Netflix series called “PervGate,” in which Stranger Things’ “upside down” (the Demogorgons are the harassers) meets the Black Mirror episode where all you see, hear, or do is being rerecorded, using “grains” to play back memories.
Companies used to have the privilege and veil of time to perform inquiries, deliberate an acceptable punishment, and craft/disseminate a multi-stakeholder narrative until social media had the power to negate due process. Those were the days.
But what if you and others in your organization are complicit in the issue? You were aware of the inappropriate conduct, or maybe you heard rumblings but did nothing about it? Is this a case of deliberate blindness? What if you didn’t know but don’t want to follow the company line because you don’t believe it was an isolated incident and that the society is in fact conducive to and rewarding sexual barbarism? In the first place, you should be ashamed of yourself. Continue reading in the second case.

NBC terminated Lauer’s contract in November 2017 after receiving “a lengthy complaint from a colleague about improper sexual behavior in the workplace,” adding that the network had “reason to believe this could not have been an isolated event.”
