Bird migration is the normal seasonal movement of birds between breeding and wintering grounds, typically north and south along a flyway. Many bird species migrate. Predation and mortality, like human hunting, are high costs of migration, which is largely driven by food availability. Birds are funneled on to particular routes by natural obstacles such as the Mediterranean Sea or the Caribbean Sea in the northern hemisphere.
Ancient Greek writers such as Homer and Aristotle, as well as the Book of Job, documented the migration of species such as storks, turtledoves, and swallows as far back as 3,000 years ago. More recently, in 1749, Johannes Leche started keeping track of the arrival dates of spring migrants in Finland, and modern scientific studies have traced migrants using techniques such as bird ringing and satellite tracking. Habitat destruction, especially of stopover and wintering sites, as well as structures such as power lines and wind farms, have increased the threats to migratory birds.

Long-distance migrants, such as swallows, breed in Europe and spend the winter in Africa, are the most well-known. However, you might be shocked to hear how many people are doing the same thing. Even the blackbirds in your garden in January may be Eastern European winter tourists.
Most species migrate south to avoid winter in far northern regions such as Canada or Scandinavia. About half of the species migrate in temperate regions like the UK, particularly insect-eaters who can’t find enough food during the winter.
Irruption is the presence of large numbers of birds that do not normally visit the UK. When the population of certain northern insects, such as waxwings, outnumbers the food supply, this occurs.
For example, after some waxwings have consumed all of the berries in their winter haunts in Scandinavia, they must travel across the sea to the United Kingdom to find more. We can’t hope to see waxwings every winter because irruptions only happen every 10 years or so.
Some birds migrate up and down rather than north to south, east to west, or east to west. This is known as vertical migration or altitudinal migration. In pursuit of a milder climate and more food, birds that breed in upland areas in the summer migrate to lowland areas in the winter.

The word emigrate is not a misspelling of the word immigrate. Emigrate means to leave a place, such as one’s home country, and settle in another. Here are a few illustrations. Mind that Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Austria to fully comprehend them.
The word immigrate starts with the letter I. If you associate I with the word “in,” you’ll note that immigrate refers to a move to a new country. Since emigrate starts with an E, you’ll note that it means to leave your home country if you equate it with exit.
