The Westfield Athenaeum was established on March 11, 1864, by an act of the Massachusetts Legislature, and opened its doors on January 1, 1868, after the town of Westfield and two major donors donated the land, building, and books. By 1895, all inhabitants of town who were fourteen years of age or older were free to use the library. The Westfield Academy Trustees gave the land and building at the corner of Court and Elm Street to the Athenaeum in 1898, and we have lived there ever since.
The Westfield Athenaeum has been serving the public, preserving our heritage, and evolving to meet the needs of our community for over a century. We offer a variety of youth programs as well as homebound distribution. Books, music, audiobooks, STEM kits, eBooks, toys, Internet access, and a variety of studying, relaxing, making, and exploring opportunities are all available.
The Smith/Strong Fund (set aside to fund historical projects) and the Thayer family, who invest in us every year, helped fund this project to digitize our newspapers. We are grateful to those who contribute to the Westfield Athenaeum, and we are honored to present this version of Westfield’s past.
