Public health is an interdisciplinary area that seeks to protect and enhance the health of individuals, families, communities, and societies at the local, national, and global levels. Hospitals and clinics, direct support agencies, health departments, and public health advocacy and policy organizations are all possible employers. Roles can differ dramatically depending on the boss, issue/population of concern, and geographical position. A career in public health does not require you to be a professional clinician; there are also wet and dry lab positions, as well as a range of education, intervention, and community-based roles.
You can start a career in public health without a master’s degree or even a bachelor’s degree, but graduate school should be considered to optimize your career opportunities.
Check out our graduate school tools to learn more about various types of degrees and how to start thinking about what is the best time to pursue your studies.

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton (born October 26, 1947) is an American politician, diplomat, lawyer, author, and public speaker who served as the 67th Secretary of State of the United States from 2009 to 2013, as a United States Senator from the state of New York from 2001 to 2009, and as First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001. When Clinton secured the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 2016, she became the first woman to be nominated for president of the United States by a major political party. She was the first woman to win the popular vote in a presidential election in the United States, but she lost the Electoral College.
Clinton was elected as New York’s first female senator in 2000. She was re-elected in 2006, and from 2003 to 2007, she chaired the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee. Clinton campaigned for medical benefits for first responders whose health was affected as a result of the September 11 attacks while in the Senate. [two] She voted yes on the resolution authorizing the Iraq War in 2002, but no on the 2007 troop surge. Clinton ran for president in 2008, but was defeated in the Democratic primary by eventual winner Barack Obama. Clinton served as Secretary of State during President Barack Obama’s first term, from 2009 to 2013. Clinton founded the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review during her presidency. She supported military action in Libya in response to the Arab Spring, but Republicans chastised her for failing to avoid or sufficiently respond to the 2012 Benghazi attack. Clinton participated in the establishment of political isolation and an international sanctions regime against Iran in order to compel it to curb its nuclear program; this initiative resulted in the multinational JCPOA nuclear agreement in 2015. Although no charges were brought against Clinton for using a private email server while she was Secretary of State, the email scandal was the most widely discussed issue during the 2016 presidential election.
