Fricke spent eight years in the Marine Corps as a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear protection expert, where he taught Marines how to plan for and react to mass-destruction incidents including nuclear or chemical warfare attacks.
His interest in the biological effects of such agents on the human body grew as a result of the experience, and he decided to pursue a career in medicine. When he was in community college, the Marine Corps Leadership Scholar program promised to give his transcripts and test scores to colleges on his behalf.
“I applied to USC on the spur of the moment, but I knew it was a long shot,” he said. “It was incredible to hear that I was competent. I put all my eggs in that basket right away, went on a campus tour, fell in love, and applied the next day.”
“After the USC Veterans Association gave a presentation at orientation, a group of about ten of us went across the street to The Lab and really clicked,” he said. “Because I was new to the city, they were the people I turned to for help during my first year.”

I liked going to class with the all-military community (92 in the cohort; consisting of active duty, reservists, and veterans from all the branches of service). I felt as if I had found a new “tribe” and loving family with whom I could share my military and post-military experiences.

Department Role: Assist students with military ties during their academic careers. VA, DoD, and state education benefits are all certified. Actively supports students and links them to departmental, campus, and neighborhood activities, facilities, and resources.
Outreach to community colleges and military installations is one of the department’s responsibilities. Assist incoming freshmen, transfer students, and graduate students. Assists students with the application process and their transfer to university.
Department Role: Assists department personnel and programming with administrative and logistical tasks on a daily basis. In terms of administrative processes, acts as a liaison between the university and the department. Assists student staff with assignments and scheduling on a regular basis.
