Fish oil may slow aging of heart
For the first time, a nutritional analysis at the University of Newcastle (UON) will see whether the spice curcumin, when combined with fish oil, will improve brain blood flow and cognitive capacity.
Dr. Wong explains, “We believe that curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric that gives curry its yellow color, can potentiate the effects of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil on brain function.”
Both nutrients target inflammation and enhance the health of blood vessels in the brain, according to Professor Peter Howe, Director of the Clinical Nutrition Research Centre. “We believe they can indirectly support cognitive efficiency by enhancing the supply of oxygen and energy sources to meet the demands of nervous tissue,” he says.
“Fish oil supplementation was found to help women in particular in our pilot study last year. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties, and we assume it can improve blood vessel function as well.”

Turmeric and fish oil have gained popularity as food additives due to their health benefits. Turmeric oil contains sesquiterpenes, and fish oil contains anti-inflammatory eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The aim of this study is to assess and compare the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of these two natural food products against aspirin as a reference. At 100 mg/kg, turmeric oil and fish oil inhibited paw edema by 76 percent and 31%, respectively, while the combination of the two at 100 mg/kg inhibited paw edema by 62 percent, which was the same as aspirin at the same dosage. Fish oil had an inhibitory effect of 86% at 50 mg/kg, and as the dosage was increased, the activity decreased. The tail flick method revealed that turmeric oil and fish oil had the highest analgesic activity at 60 and 90 minutes, respectively, while the combination of the two had the lowest analgesic activity. As a result, the two popular food ingredients, turmeric and fish oils, have desirable biochemical properties that will enable them to be used as food and medicine in the future.

When curcumin and fish oil are combined, they form a strong synergistic combination that can help with a variety of health issues. Curcumin and omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil are also anti-inflammatory. They’re both strong on their own, but when combined, they’re even more so. Fish oil and a particular form of curcumin (C3 Complex) have also been shown to help with metabolic syndrome by lowering triglycerides in the blood.

1. Curcumin is fat soluble, which means it dissolves when it comes into contact with fat. Fish oil’s omega 3 fats (DHA and EPA) aid curcumin absorption more than the dry powder alone. In addition, piperine, a black pepper extract, aids in the absorption of curcumin by over 2000%. Curcumin, the primary active ingredient in turmeric powder, is poorly absorbed on its own. As a result, combining it with both omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil and black pepper extract will significantly boost absorption.

Curcumin and/or turmeric. Curcumin, which is contained in the spice turmeric, has antioxidant properties that can help to reduce inflammation and pain associated with arthritis. Curcumin accounts for only around 3% of turmeric, according to researchers,5 so a curcumin supplement is often recommended.
