Immanuel Mar Thoma Church is a member of the North American Diocese of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church (Malankara Mar Thoma Suriyani Sabha in Malayalam), which is one of the world’s oldest communities of practicing Christians.
The formation of Immanuel Mar Thoma Church in Houston, Texas, on September 1, 1994, marked another landmark in the Mar Thoma Church’s journey in North America. The grace of God, the vision and devotion of a few parish lay leaders, and the timely guidance of our then Diocesan Bishops Rt. Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom Suffragan Metropolitan and Rt. Rev. Dr. Zacharias Mar Theophilus Episcopa, as well as clerics Rev. Eapen Cherian, Rev. T.I. Joseph, and Rev. Raju George, paved the way for the establishment of a The parish began with 140 families, nearly all of whom were members of Houston’s Trinity Mar Thoma Church.
The property (14.462 acres) at 12803 Sugar Ridge Blvd., Stafford, Texas 77477 was purchased on April 24, 1993, in the name of The Mar Thoma Syrian Church of India Inc., Stafford, Texas, by Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom Suffragan Metropolitan. For a total of $ 145, 365.21, the property was purchased at auction. The required sum was raised initially by donations from a group of 21 families, with another 81 families later contributing. During the Episcopal visit, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom Episcopa visited the new church site and bestowed his blessings.

Trinity is a Greek word that means ” Mar Thoma is the oldest Mar Thoma congregation in North America, with the diocese’s oldest self-built church building and a long history of being the largest congregation. In 1974, two dozen Mar Thoma families were invited to a visit by a Marthomite priest, who encouraged them to meet with one another on a regular basis. The Houston Marthomites invited a young priest from India to hold monthly services for them when he came to Dallas to attend a seminary, and the congregation was officially formed; it was approved by the 1978 church synod.
The congregation had outgrown house meetings by the early 1980s, and was now meeting frequently in nearby Episcopal churches. The Mar Thoma Church and the Episcopal Church in Houston have always had a good relationship, and churches were usually willing to allow Mar Thoma services to take place after their own Sunday services. The growing Mar Thoma population, on the other hand, wanted a Sunday morning service and a place of their own, so they bought land in south Houston and started building. However, an economic downturn in Houston left many of the community’s male members unemployed, relying on their wives (most of whom were in medical professions) for financial help, and leaving the construction project severely underfunded. The group pulled through with great determination, and the finished building was dedicated on July 14, 1984.
