Thorndyke road school – flag day 2017

Divide the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers to get the student/teacher ratio. Please keep in mind that a lower student-to-teacher ratio does not always imply a smaller class size. Schools occasionally employ part-time teachers, and some teachers are hired for specialized teaching with limited class sizes. The student-to-teacher ratio is influenced by these and other factors. Pre-Kindergarten may not be included of the student/teacher ratio in private schools.

The Washington State Arts Commission commissioned the Orchards School Mural, which portrays students and teachers interacting and participating in educational activities in an imagined landscape of apple and plum orchards, representing the school’s name and the Vancouver area’s farming past. The mural stretches partway up the stairwells and occupies three walls of the lobby.
Thorndyke Road School first opened its doors in May of 1927. The school commissioned me to design and paint a mural about the school’s past since its inception in 2003. I chose the example of a tree that was planted and grew over the years into a full-scale tree on the cafeteria wall. Throughout each decade, I merged photographs of students from the school with historical figures and incidents from Worcester’s and the country’s past. Robert Goddard, who successfully fired a rocket from a nearby hill in 1926, and Francis Perkins of Worcester, the first female cabinet member who served as FDR’s secretary of labor, are among the notable figures portrayed.
