Physics classes in high school are usually taken at the end of your high school career. You’ve probably taken chemistry, biology, and earth science, and you might have noticed that the distinctions between them made science seem disjointed and difficult to understand. Physics gives you the opportunity to bring everything together under one unifying science that describes everything from electron activity to planet motion. Since physics is so fundamental to all other sciences, some schools are promoting a program in which students take physics first, then all of the other sciences that students usually encounter in high school. I concur with Bob. My students have weighed paper clips in science class and found that they vary in weight from.5 to 1.5 grams. The weight of a plastic pen cap (think Bic) is exactly 1.0 gram. Shouldn’t we inform the rest of the world? For evidence, please visit my website:
While the gram has its defects, they are not as serious as those of the kilogram. The gram is a much easier unit to deal with in exponential notation. For example, water has a density of 1 gram per cubic cm, and the earth’s mass is 10E27.8 grams (approximately) and the sun’s mass is 10E33.3 grams (approx.).
