Song Ci wrote Collected Cases of Injustice Rectified or the Washing Away of Wrongs in 1247[1] as a handbook for coroners during the Song Dynasty (960-1276). The author wrote the book with the aim of avoiding injustice by combining many historical forensic science cases with his own experiences. Generations of officials admired the book, which was eventually translated into English, German, Japanese, French, and other languages.
There are several versions of the book, but the first was written during the Yuan Dynasty and consisted of fifty-three chapters in five volumes. The first volume details the Song Dynasty’s imperial decree on the inspection of bodies and injuries. The second volume includes post-mortem analysis notes and procedures. The appearances of corpses from different causes of death are described in the third, fourth, and fifth volumes, as well as methods of treating specific injuries in a wounded individual. [2] Song Ci ruled on autopsy report for court, how to preserve facts in the examining process, and why staff must demonstrate investigation impartiality to the public;[3] how to wash a dead body for examining various causes of death. The book had included strategies to differentiate between suicide and suicide impersonation at the time. [number four]
