Language is essential, as any skilled speaker or speechwriter would tell you. In reality, some of the most significant and memorable lines in American history have come from presidents’ speeches: You don’t have to be a president or a well-known speaker to use language effectively. So, in this chapter, we’ll look at the significance of language. We’ll start by talking about the differences between oral and written language, then move on to some specific language use guidelines, and finally, six main elements of language.
When we say “language,” we’re talking about the words you want to use in your vocabulary, so we’re talking about spoken language. Prior to the invention of written words, there was still spoken language. If you think of the human history of language as a twelve-inch ruler, written or registered language has only existed for the “last quarter of an inch,” according to Wrench, McCroskey, and Richmond (Wrench, et al., 2008). Furthermore, only a small percentage of the world’s more than six thousand languages use a written alphabet (Lewis, 2009). We will first look at the basic functions of language before diving into the distinctions between oral and written language to better grasp the importance of language.

A language is a formal form of communication that includes speech (spoken language), gestures (sign language), and writing, and is used by humans. Most languages use a glyph-based writing system to represent the original sound or gesture as well as its meaning. [1][2][3][4][5][6][ [three]
Linguistics is the systematic study of language. Critical studies of languages, such as language theory, the relationships between language and thought, and how words reflect reality, have been discussed at least since the time of Gorgias and Plato in ancient Greece. Some thinkers, such as Rousseau (1712–1778), argue that language arose from passions, while others, such as Kant (1724–1804), argue that languages arose from objective and logical thinking. Philosophers of the twentieth century, such as Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951), argued that philosophy is essentially the study of language. Ferdinand de Saussure and Noam Chomsky are two major figures in contemporary linguistics.

Language, a system of communication that uses symbols in a daily way to construct context, is also possible thanks to our vast knowledge. We can express our intelligence to others through language through communicating, reading, and writing. While other species can interact in certain ways, none of them have language. There will be a thorough examination of certain aspects of language now.
There are underlying structural rules in all languages that allow for effective communication.
Each language is unique. In English, an adjective precedes a noun (“red house”), while in Spanish, the adjective precedes the noun (“casa [house] roja [red].”) In German, you can string nouns together to form giant compound words; in Chinese, the pitch of your voice dictates the meaning of your words; and in American Sign Language, you can move your hands and face to articulate absolute, grammatical sentences with tense and aspect. Both languages, however, have fundamental underpinnings that enable people to speak and understand them.

What is the meaning of visual language? During the student uprising in Tiananmen Square, everybody recalls the picture of the lone man staring down the tank. Who recalls the photo caption or the headline? Humans, as visually focused beings, store more pictures in their long-term memory than text. According to studies, the average person only recalls 30% of what they read, but nearly 80% of knowledge provided with visual elements is remembered. Nonetheless, without the words to contextualize the visual picture, the photo of the lone student would be less strong. This is, in essence, visual communication.
The method of transmitting a message or idea using images and text is known as visual language. It necessitates a seamless integration of words and pictures. The remaining contact is ambiguous if the words or pictures are removed. Vocabulary, grammar, and syntax are all part of visual language. The visual language’s vocabulary consists of basic design elements such as line, space, form, texture, and color. These fundamental elements are the tools of the trade in architecture. Designers who don’t have these resources are missing out on the basics, leaving the output of a piece to chance.
