Philosophy – hegel

Wayland’s lectures for the senior course in moral philosophy that he taught as President of Brown University starting in 1827 became the basis for the novel. This type of course was popular at the time. Wayland had taken one as an undergraduate at Union College under President Eliphalet Nott, who would become a lifelong supporter. Such loosely arranged courses provided an opportunity for the college president, who was more often concerned with character development than with learning for its own sake, to impress his personality and moral views on the seniors before sending them out into the world. Wayland’s Brown course, which was less rambling than the others, was dubbed “one garden place in the waste of the program” by a former student.
Wayland fought utilitarian ethics in the eighteenth century, which focused moral decisions on the effects of men’s actions, in his lectures and, ultimately, in his novel. Instead, he believed that conscience was a faculty that guided man’s conduct in the direction of moral law. This concept was introduced in the first section of Wayland’s book, “Theoretical Ethics.” In the second chapter, titled “Practical Ethics,” he identified three working principles: the everlasting truth of moral law as revealed in the Scriptures, the Protestant tradition’s right of private judgment, and the Jeffersonian republican restriction of government powers. He then used these to justify and validate the desirable virtues of justice, veracity, chastity, and benevolence in moral practice.
