Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Delroy Lindo, Stanley Tucci, Tchéky Karyo, DJ Qualls, Bruce Greenwood, and Alfre Woodard star in Jon Amiel’s 2003 science fiction disaster film The Core. The film follows a team on a mission to drill to the Earth’s core and detonate a series of nuclear explosions in order to restart the Earth’s rotation. Paramount Pictures released the film on March 28, 2003. Critics gave it mixed reviews, and it was a box office flop, grossing just $74 million worldwide on a $85 million production budget.
Scientists led by geophysicist Dr. Josh Keyes and scientists Dr. Serge Leveque and Dr. Conrad Zimsky have concluded that the Earth’s molten core has stopped spinning due to a series of minor, unrelated events involving the magnetic field. The field will fail in months unless it can be restarted, exposing the surface to deadly solar radiation. The US government is funding a top-secret project to develop a ship capable of digging to the core and releasing nuclear arms to restart the rotation. They use Dr. Ed “Braz” Brazzelton’s work, which includes a material called “Unobtainium” that can withstand and turn core pressures into energy, as well as a laser-based high-speed drilling array. Commander Robert Iverson and Major Rebecca “Beck” Childs of NASA are assigned to pilot the Virgil, a multi-compartment submarine, while computer hacker Theodore Donald “Rat” Finch is hired to keep news of the impending catastrophe or attempt to restart the core off the Internet.
