Reuters/Parivartan Sharma On Monday morning, a massive, system-wide network outage at Delta delayed hundreds of thousands of passengers, a problem that is becoming increasingly prevalent in a world operated by interconnected and aging computer systems.
And after flights were resumed, Delta couldn’t tell what had caused the failure. It’s likely that the organization will never know anything. When United Airlines flights were grounded last summer due to a similar outage, the airline ultimately identified the cause as a router problem that disrupted network access for many main applications. Understanding and resolving the cause of one type of outage, however, does not provide protection against another. United had to cancel flights due to “automation problems” only a month before the router problem.
Large-scale technical failures are not only inconvenient, but they can also be dangerous, particularly as machines increasingly manage critical operations in a variety of industries. Complex systems are redefining how humans think about and communicate with technology, a paradigm change that comes with its own set of risks. Overcomplicated, Samuel Arbesmn’s latest book, is based on this point.
