The surface area of a geometric solid defines the substance that will be used to cover it. The surface areas of geometric solids are determined by adding the areas of each geometric shape within the solid.
A prism is a solid figure with two parallel congruent sides called bases and lateral faces that are parallelograms connecting them. Prisms come in two shapes: rectangular and triangular.
At its base, a pyramid has three or four triangular lateral surfaces, as well as a three or four-sided surface. The surface area of the pyramid below is determined by adding the areas of the four triangles and the base square. The slant height is the height of a triangle inside a pyramid.
A cone’s base is a circle, which is easy to see. A cone’s lateral surface is a parallelogram with a base half the diameter of the cone and a height equal to the slant height. This is a bit more difficult to see, but it’s easy to see if you cut the lateral surface of the cone into pieces and lay them next to each other.
