The throat and tonsils are swabbed for a quick strep examination to extract bacteria from the contaminated area for processing. The bacteria are tested to see whether the sore throat is caused by Group A strep (streptococcal) bacteria.
To ensure that the test is correct, a good sample of throat secretions is needed. During the operation, the patient must stay completely still so that the doctor can gather enough secretions for an accurate examination.

Why woman’s medical bill for lab test cost her $28,000

The “Bill of the Month” series, produced by “CBS This Morning” in collaboration with Kaiser Health News and NPR, exposes shocking medical bills. This week, we look at the case of a woman who received a bill for more than $28,000 after a regular doctor’s visit. A woman in New York City visited her doctor because she was suffering from a sore throat. And she received a medical bill for more than $28,000 a few days later. Alexa Kasdan, a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota member, decided to make sure her cold symptoms weren’t severe, so she made an appointment with Dr. Roya Fathollahi, a doctor she had previously seen, according to CBS News correspondent David Begnaud. “I figured I could have strep throat because my throat had started hurting a lot,” Kasdan said.

A throat culture is a test that looks for germs that may cause an infection (such as bacteria or fungus). A sample of cells from the back of your throat is mixed with a material that encourages bacteria growth. The culture is negative if no germs develop. The culture is positive if germs that can cause infection develop. A microscope or chemical tests may be used to determine the form of germ. Other tests can be performed in order to determine the best treatment for the infection. Sensitivity monitoring is the term for this.
Strep throat, scarlet fever, and rheumatic fever may all be caused by this infection. Before a throat culture, a rapid strep test (or fast strep) can be performed if strep throat is suspected. The results of a rapid strep test are available in 10 minutes, as opposed or 1 to 2 days for a throat culture. Antibiotics should be started right away if the rapid strep test is positive. The quick strep examination is less effective than a throat culture. Even when strep bacteria are present, the rapid strep test will produce false-negative results. Many physicians prescribe a throat culture if the results of a rapid strep test are negative. This ensures that strep throat is not present.

The following are possible results of a rapid strep examination. Typical A regular or negative test results in the absence of strep bacteria. Unusual A positive or irregular strep examination indicates the presence of strep bacteria.
