After the merger of St. Joseph and Holy Ghost parishes in Attleboro, MA, our parish group of St. Vincent de Paul Parish was formed in 2013. On April 12th, 1964, Bishop Connolly dedicated SVdP Parish, which had previously been the site of Holy Ghost Parish (see above). While the parish name was changed at the time of the merger, it retains its original devotion to the Third Person of the Holy Trinity, as mandated by canon law. We were the first parish in our diocese to be trilingual from the beginning, while also upholding St. Joseph’s Parish’s French-Canadian tradition. Following the example of our patron, St. Joseph and Holy Ghost Parishes have had active social ministries, which we continue in our service to the poor and vulnerable in our society.
St. Joseph’s was established in 1905 to serve Attleboro’s French Canadian community. In 1906, land was purchased at the intersection of North Main and Maple Streets, and construction on a basement church began; Bishop Stang dedicated it the following year. Construction on the upper church began in 1927 and was finished and dedicated on October 13th, 1929 by Cardinal Archbishop of Montreal. In the years that followed, the parish grew even further. The Spanish culture in Attleboro was based at St. Joseph’s beginning in 1971. In later years, the rectory basement would become home to a food pantry.

“What is going on? Today, there is a great silence and stillness over the world, a great silence because the King sleeps; the earth was frightened and still, because God slept in the flesh and raised those who had been sleeping through the ages. The underworld has trembled since God has died in the flesh.
He really goes in search of our first father, as if he were a lost sheep, and he wishes to pay a visit to those who sit in the darkness and shadow of death. He, God, and Adam’s son, go to free the prisoner Adam and his fellow prisoner Eve from their suffering.
The Lord enters, carrying his winning sword, the cross. When Adam, the first created man, sees him, he screams in fear and says to all, “My Lord be with you all.” And Christ responds to Adam by saying, “And with your soul.” He takes his hand in his and lifts him up, saying, ‘Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, for Christ will give you light.’
