Annie Wheeler ’14, a member of the women’s hockey club team, says, “It’s incredibly easy to get involved in club sports on campus.” Club sports, unlike intramurals, are open to all students and include extracurricular competition without the pressures of varsity competition.
Club teams compete against neighboring institutions such as SUNY Canton, Clarkson, UVM, Hobart, and William Smith, among others, in a variety of sports ranging from ultimate Frisbee to Alpine skiing to soccer, lacrosse, and broomball.
“Club sports will help students in a variety of ways,” Annie says. “I’ve always maintained that being safe is better when you’re part of a community. “Whether on a field or in the rink, club sports inspire students to get out and be active.”
Club sports provide students with opportunities to engage outside of the classroom, in addition to friendly games with other clubs. “Meeting new people is the best aspect of club sports. You could meet people on your team that you would not have met otherwise. Annie explains that “playing as a team puts you closer together.” “Even if you’ve never played before, it might be a fun way to learn something new.”
