Saint John’s High School is a Shrewsbury, Massachusetts-based private Catholic boys’ high school. It is part of the Worcester Roman Catholic Diocese. The Xaverian Brothers founded the school and continue to support it.
The Xaverian Brothers have a long history in Worcester, dating back to September 1893, when a group of four Xaverians arrived in the city to open Saint John’s Parish Grammar School for Boys. A three-year high school program was implemented in 1898. When the College of the Holy Cross discontinued its college prep or high school senior course in 1906 to focus solely on college-level work, a fourth, or senior year, was added.
In November 1953, John Cardinal Wright, then Bishop of Worcester, moved the high school property to the Xaverian Brothers under the new name of Saint John’s Preparatory School of Worcester. This case took place on the 100th anniversary of the Brothers’ arrival in America in 1854. In 1954, there were eleven Brothers and 354 students at the school. In neighboring Shrewsbury, the brothers bought a large acreage. This was the first step in Saint John’s transformation into a regional high school serving all of Worcester County. Pioneer Field was founded in 1959 when one hundred twenty-five acres at the foot of Main Street hill were purchased. All groups had moved to the Shrewsbury location by 1962. In 1963 and 1964, a gym and cafeteria were added. [two]

SHREWSBURY, ENGLAND — It took until the second quarter for top-ranked Catholic Memorial to find its groove, but once it did, the Catholic Conference powerhouse had little trouble flexing its muscles in the season opener to effectively kill St. John’s of Shrewsbury, 42-10, on Saturday.
The Knights’ three first-quarter errors weren’t much of a hindrance, as solid performances from the secondary on the other side of the ball — including multiple third-down stops — gave CM (1-0) all the time it needed to catch up. Datrell Jones and Carson Harwood combined for 144 yards on the field and two touchdowns, leading an offense that saw the majority of its success in the third quarter with a 21-point lead.
Up until he left the game due to injury, quarterback JC Petrongolo (186 passing yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions) did enough in the passing game to resolve a sluggish start, but three forced turnovers and a 1-of-12 showing on third down from the defense played as significant a role as any in the victory.
