Omega-3 spring valley supplement review by kim townsel
Supplements containing the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA found in fish and marine oils have been shown to improve mental health, reduce inflammation, and even prevent cancer. But which fish oil supplements are the best in terms of quality and value, and how do they stack up against prescription fish oils like Vascepa and Lovaza?
ConsumerLab in White Plains, New York, checked 28 common fish and marine oil supplements (made from fish oil, krill oil, algal oil, calamari oil, and sea buckthorn oil) for EPA and DHA, as well as DPA and omega-7s, as well as contaminants including lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic. Three supplements were found to have issues with consistency or labeling during the studies.
ConsumerLab chose its Top Picks for standard softgels, enteric-coated softgels, and liquids from among the brands that passed all of the tests and reviews. Furthermore, ConsumerLab discovered that certain supplements with extremely high EPA and/or DHA concentrations were comparable to more expensive prescription omega-3 drugs like Vascepa and Lovaza.

Three lots of each brand were checked in the lab, all of which were purchased in New York-area stores. All of them had the recommended amount of EPA and DHA, omega-3 fatty acids that can help prevent heart attacks and strokes. None of the samples tested positive for lead, arsenic, dioxins, or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that were set by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), a nongovernmental standard-setting organization, or the European Union.
However, total PCBs were found in one sample of CVS, GNC, and Sundown items, as well as two samples of Nature’s Bounty, in quantities that might necessitate warning labels under California’s Proposition 65, a consumer right-to-know statute.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, most checked pills are believed to be “purified” or “free” of PCBs, mercury, or other toxins, statements that have no clear regulatory meaning. According to an FDA spokeswoman, the agency has taken no enforcement action against any omega-3 manufacturer over PCBs or other pollutants because it sees no public-health danger.
Two Kirkland Signature samples failed the USP’s disintegration test for pills with enteric coatings (which are supposed to avoid fishy aftertaste): Their coating can disintegrate in the stomach rather than the small intestine, as it should. Surprisingly, it was one of the few items tested to be branded “USP Certified,” which means the USP has tested and verified the claimed ingredients, potency, and manufacturing process.

Fish, especially fatty fish high in two types of omega-3 fatty acids—eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA—should be eaten at least twice a week, according to the American Heart Association. Fish oil capsules are often used as a supplement for people who don’t get enough omega-3s from their diet. Consult your doctor before taking fish oil or some other supplement.
When reading the labels on fish oil supplements, pay attention to the amount of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids in each capsule. A regular 1000 mg fish oil supplement with 300 mg omega-3 fatty acids is available from both Spring Valley and GNC. A 1400 mg capsule with 900 mg of omega-3s is also available from Spring Valley. GNC offers a fish oil with 900 mg of omega-3s called Triple Power. Consult your doctor to decide the appropriate dose for your needs.

Viva Naturals Triple Strength Omega-3 Fish Oil was rated first in overall label accuracy, with a total omega-3 content variance of just 2% and EPA and DHA claims within 3.5 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively.
Products had an average of 17 calories per serving, with a range of 0 to 45 calories. In the 51 products analyzed in this report, the average EPADHA concentration was 47 percent, ranging from 2 to 97 percent. The average fish oil supplement contained 473.3 mg of EPA and 243.1 mg of DHA per serving.
The protection of fish oil products is inextricably linked to the purity of the manufacturing process. Mercury contamination, rancidity (TOTOX score), and PCB content can all play a role in the production of negative health effects. Inactive additives are also added to improve food protection. In this analysis, eight supplements included ‘natural’ flavors like citrus-derived additives. Coromega Omega-3, for example, contained benzoic acid, a common antibacterial agent linked to carcinogenic risks when combined with vitamin C. The artificial coloring agents FD&C Blue 1 and FD&C Red 40, as well as the whitening agent titanium dioxide, were both controversial excipients.
