Aimee’s mother scheduled an emergency consultation with an optician after physicians were unable to make a diagnosis. “Towards the end of this period, I still had double vision,” she said. “I couldn’t walk straight or in a line properly, so Mum drove me to Specsavers.” The optician noticed something wasn’t quite right when she arrived for her appointment in Craigavon. “I just sat down, and they called me downstairs for eyedrops, and they took pictures of the back of my eye,” Aimee remembered. The optician realized something was wrong with the images and summoned another employee, who said, “I believe we need to send you to the hospital.” It was very frightening to hear.” Aimee was referred to Craigavon Area Hospital for MRI scans of her brain.
She is currently enrolled in the first year of a two-year BTEC course in Health and Social Care at Southern Regional College in Lurgan, and plans to serve as an auxiliary nurse or healthcare assistant after graduation before applying to universities to earn a nursing degree. “It’s going well, and I’m doing well on the course,” she said. I’ll be able to go to university after I graduate, but I’m considering auxiliary nursing first because my sister is an auxiliary nurse and I learn a lot from her.
