Asl class #2
was established in April of 2008. Our first class as ASL Academy was an on-site class for a business in Boston. In the spring of 2009, we held our first class in our region at the former Gibbs College. The room was given to us as a gift to assist us in getting started, and we held classes there during the spring and summer semesters. At that time, we had leased a two-classroom office and Student Center space in Pawtucket. We added two more classrooms in an adjacent building in January.
On July 1, 2013, we relocated to 255 Main St in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. This new location allowed us to be in one building with all of our classrooms, lending library, language lab, office, and ASL Cafe open to all of our students and staff.
My name is Manuel Martin, and I’m the owner and program director of this company. Although the business is fresh, the principles behind it have been developed over a long period of time. The program began in 1994, when I began teaching elementary school classes in Worcester, Massachusetts, and there were no appropriate teaching materials available. I finally got to the point that I was teaching 15 to 20 classes a week, ranging from kindergarten to adults. I began teaching college classes in 2001. By 2006, I was teaching all levels of English from preschool to university, from beginner to fluency.
