On the site of the current Belknap House, the first Roman Catholic Church in Andover was built at 71 Central Street. The Archbishop of Boston, John Bernard Fitzpatrick, bought a plot of land on Central St. from Mathew Culley on June 22, 1852. Rev. James O’Donnell O.S.C. of Lawrence constructed a modest church building on the site, as well as a cottage house and a small barn. St. Augustine’s Parish was established by the St. Mary’s Church Society of Lawrence as a mission church. Lawrence clergy served the church until 1866, when St. Augustine’s was organized as a separate parish.
The first pastor was Rev. Michael F. Gallagher, O.S.A. “He was succeeded by Rev. Ambrose A. Mullen, O.S.A. after his untimely death in 1869.” Father Mullen, a former president of Villanova College, brought “experience and knowledge” to the parish, which helped it grow significantly.
William Corse has sold his land and buildings on Essex Street to Father A. A. Mullen, according to the Andover Advertiser (AA) of July 9, 1875. On July 12, 1875, James Howarth signed the deed move from Corse to Father Mullen. The deed stipulated that since the property contained the William Corse house, Corse could use the east side tenement rent free for the rest of the year, while Mr. Osborn, who rented the west side tenement, could continue to rent for the same period of time. William Corse was an Andover businessman who operated a shoe shop in the Baptist Church’s basement before moving to other locations.
