The Hill’s Italian presence can still be seen today in its majority Italian American population and numerous Italian businesses. One cannot help but note the abundance of authentic Italian restaurants, stores, and bakeries as one walks through this neighborhood. Domed churches abound, soaring architectural masterpieces influenced by Italian styles and reminiscent of the neoclassical period. Religious items such as books, scriptures, ornaments, and trinkets can be found in the shops. The Hill is teeming with Italian-American Catholics who are friendly and welcoming. This community is proud of its heritage and religious origins, resulting in a culturally diverse area. Italian Roman Catholic Church of St. Ambrose
St. Ambrose is the patron saint of Italian Catholics in the Hill. It was designed in the middle of the city by the Italians to serve as the community’s focal point and unifying force. St. Ambrose Church was founded in 1903 by Italian immigrants who had settled in the city as an Italian-Catholic Church that acted as a place for people to pray, offer thanks, and marry. The church was destroyed by fire on January 20, 1921. The people, on the other hand, were adamant about rebuilding their community’s heart because they believed it was important to have a place to worship and thank God for their blessings. On June 26, 1926, the Church was restored and reopened, with the addition of five new bells. St. Ambrose, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St. Theresa, St. Nazario, and St. Vincent Ferreri were portrayed by the five bells. Father Giovannini, the parish priest at the time, gave a speech in which he dedicated the new parish to all Italian immigrants, past and present. “This Church stands as one of the best in the city and will remain as a memorial to the Italian people,” he said, expressing his admiration. The Church is now the heart of the community and serves as a place of worship for the present congregation. (four)

The pastors of St. Mary’s and SS. Peter and Paul declared the formation of the St. Ambrose pilgrimage as a new parish family on August 1, 1947, two years after World War II ended. It started at the Catholic Children’s Home, where parishioners were served Mass before a new church could be built.
Bishop James Griffith selected Father Andrew Robinson to lead this new parish family. A meeting was declared at Mass on the first Sunday. The new parish leaders’ first order of business was to plan for a new parish facility. A total of fourteen acres were purchased for $10,500 from the Maher family. A simple church, a parish rectory, and the beginnings of an elementary school were to be housed there. Parishioners continued to pray at the Children’s Home in the meantime. School was in session at both the Ursuline Convent and the John Springman family’s house.
The new church was completed on February 8, 1948, after much hard work and dedication by Father Robinson and the parishioners. Two hundred fifty families gathered to worship in their new church, and 137 students, along with their four Ursuline teachers, welcomed their new school house. The first part of the journey was completed, but it continued as the surrounding area grew and the people’s spiritual needs grew.

It’s adorable! When I ran into some technical problems with my printer, Ellie was incredibly supportive. After we decided that it was a setting problem rather than a file issue, she took the time to troubleshoot on her end and even sent me some printer setting suggestions. Ellie, thank you very much!!
