Over the last decade, higher education has undergone a transformation. Campuses today are a far cry from the narrowly based learning institutions of the past. They are more than just places to study; they are vibrant microcosms of operation where people can learn and develop socially and intellectually. They are stressful environments in which students must contend with increasing academic and social pressures. They are environments that measure and form a person’s sense of self and social identity.
Laura DaRos, assistant dean of student affairs at SMFA, Tufts University, and panelist for our recent discussion on today’s changing college campus, asked, “So, what does it mean for students to participate in a space?” As architects, we return to this issue when designing new student spaces. Panelist Jason Meier, director of student engagement and leadership at Emerson College, pointed out that historically, students have not been invited to the planning table for the next campus center or the redesign of a dining facility.

MISSION: To help parents trigger their innate talents and extend their awareness so that their children succeed from the outset, we provide organized coaching, material products, and community connections.
WHERE WE WORK: Did you know that a child’s brain growth is most important during the first three years of life? Despite this, low-income families’ support disparities are greatest in the early years, when they enter the pre-K and K-12 school systems. However, research indicates that the help provided during these formative years has the greatest effect on long-term health, wellbeing, education, and income.
At Room to Grow, we help low-income families with children aged 0 to 3 years old through a three-year preventative program model. Parents come to Room to Grow every three months, beginning in the third trimester of pregnancy and continuing for the first three years of the baby’s life. Our clinicians support families in overcoming the difficulties and enjoying the joys of parenting at each visit. Discussing developmental stages, presenting methods for recognizing and responding to their child’s many needs, and providing tools and support to deal with raising a child in usually difficult situations are all examples of this. Parents often receive age-appropriate material needs at each visit, helping them to completely care for their baby in a timely and meaningful manner.

Sorting, arranging, and showcasing the thousands of gifts of baby products we receive each year, organizing collection drives, and helping with fundraising and activities are all examples of volunteer opportunities. The boutique appearance of our room is an important part of our program, and we are often in need of dependable volunteers to assist us in achieving this aim. Volunteers assist in the organizing and preparation of our inventory of infant and toddler clothes, toys, books, and supplies, as well as ensuring an orderly and welcoming atmosphere.
