1st Samantha Kingston, a young girl, is forced to relive the day of her death every day for a week in the first-person perspective of the book. Samantha takes new acts every day in an attempt to figure out why this happens to her, some of which are out of character and surprise her family and friends.
Samantha “Sam” Kingston, a famous 17-year-old, is having a seemingly ordinary day when the story starts. Sam spends her day with her three closest childhood friends, Elody, Lindsay, and Ally, on February 12, also known as “Cupid’s Day.” Sam attends Kent McFuller’s party that night, an unpopular boy at their high school who used to be her best friend, but who Sam now treats badly despite the fact that they both know he has romantic feelings for her. Sam was supposed to have sex with her boyfriend, Rob, that night, but he was too inebriated. Juliet Sykes, a teenager who has been bullied by Sam and her best friends since elementary school, joins the party and refers to them as “Bitches.” In response to the allegation, Sam’s friends spill alcoholic drinks on Juliet, call her names, and shove her. Juliet bolts from the building.

Sam can hear music in his dream from tonight. The music in her dream is coming from her high school’s guidance counselor’s office. She can see the cheesy inspiring posters that hang on the office wall, and they make Sam feel less terrified for some reason. She discovers that she hasn’t been falling in all of her dreams; instead, she has been floating.
Sam is becoming less and less afraid of what is happening to her with each “reset.” By day six, she’s realized that there’s nothing sinister going on at work in the loop—rather, she’s being pushed to do something and lifted up to meet it.
Sam loves being woken up by her alarm clock in the morning. She’s grateful for everything around her, and she greets her family in an uncharacteristically cheerful manner. Sam’s mother inquires about breakfast, as she does every morning, and Sam refuses, as she does every morning. Sam knows how much she enjoys her life’s tiny, regular routine—”the specifics that are [her] life’s unique pattern.” She claims that if you only take a moment to calm down and look around, a lot of things become beautiful.
