Developmentally acceptable teaching methods provide a variety of skills and strategies that are tailored to each child’s age, development, individual characteristics, family, social, and cultural contexts. These teaching practices are structured to promote development and learning for each child in all realms and subject areas, and are based on the caring relationships that educators cultivate with each child and family, as well as among all children and families (see guideline 1, “Creating a caring group of learners”). Teaching methods capitalize on each child’s unique strengths while actively combating prejudice. Educators blend opportunities for each child to exercise option and agency within the framework of a designed environment built to promote unique learning experiences and concrete goals through their deliberate teaching. Educators know that children are active builders of their own understanding of the world around them, and that initiating and regulating their own learning experiences, as well as engaging with peers, are beneficial to them.

Candidates who have completed early childhood degree programs have a strong understanding of child growth. They use their knowledge of the characteristics and needs of young children, as well as the various interacting influences on their development and learning, to build environments that are safe, respectful, supportive, and challenging for each child.
I started my studies by learning about child development after deciding that I wanted to be an Early Childhood teacher. I majored in Human Development and Family Studies with a focus in Early Childhood Development and Education for my undergraduate degree. I could not be a successful Early Childhood teacher without a foundation in child development and an awareness of the features, needs, and desires of young children.

This study examines a program that incorporates a standardized curriculum for five-year-olds into Norway’s universal preschool system. We perform a field trial with 691 five-year-olds in 71 preschools to determine the effects of treatment on children’s math, language, and executive function development. The nine-month curriculum intervention has effects on child growth at post-intervention, and the effects last one year after the therapy finishes, relative to business as normal. The results are entirely influenced by the low-quality preschool centers described at the start, implying that a standardized program will help to minimize disparity in early childhood learning environments.
