Perf critical issues in policing

The Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) is a national membership group comprised mainly of police executives from the country’s largest cities, counties, and federal law enforcement agencies. Via study and participation in public policy debates, the association is committed to strengthening policing and advancing professionalism. 1st It has fostered dialogue, study, and an openness to questioning conventional police practices since its establishment in 1976 with support and funding from the Police Foundation[2]. The organization’s headquarters are in Washington, D.C.
Tuition fees for educational services, grants from private and nonprofit organizations, membership dues, and government contracts are the main sources of operating revenue for PERF, which was established in 1976.
Since 2014, PERF has concentrated on developing policies and training programs to reduce police use of lethal force, especially in circumstances involving people who have mental illness, intellectual disabilities, opioid addictions, or other factors that may cause them to act erratically or dangerously, as well as when the subject does not have a weapon.

“The recent introduction of body-worn cameras has already had an effect on policing, and as more departments embrace this technology, the impact can only grow. The decision to put body-worn cameras in place should not be taken lightly. It will become increasingly impossible to have second thoughts or scale back a body-worn camera policy after an organization has gone down the path of installing body-worn cameras—and once the public has come to expect the availability of video records… Body-worn cameras will help police officers provide the high-quality public service that is demanded of them while also enhancing the public’s perception of their police departments’ credibility and sense of procedural justice. Furthermore, agencies that have already implemented body-worn cameras report that having cameras on officers increases their efficiency as well as the behavior of the community members who are being filmed ” (p. v). This study is divided into three sections: potential advantages of body-worn cameras, implementation concerns, and body-worn camera recommendations. A Recommendations Matrix is included as an appendix.
