Dressing my dolls -huge our generation haul

Dear Target Headquarters:

Our generation doll review (secret racism)

My sister and I have dark skin and curly/kinky hair that we style into nice afros when we go out. We’ve been to Target’s Our Generation doll aisle many times, and the only dolls on the shelf are white. We know they make colorful dolls, but you don’t seem to have any in stock. We’re curious as to why that is. My parents instilled in us the belief that we need to see ourselves in our toys in order to feel important as children. I have a variety of dolls, including white dolls, but my parents and I agree that I don’t need any more white dolls to feel like white people matter! Many children of color live in this neighborhood, and even my white friends will probably enjoy having dolls with various skin tones and hair textures. And sincere gratitude, Lola is an eight-year-old girl.
Conclusion
We haven’t yet received a response from Target’s headquarters. But, without my children, I went to the store in question earlier today and noticed a small sign of change, as if corporate was saying, “Black lives matter… a little bit.” Or, more likely, what I saw was the product of the compassionate customer service representative’s efforts. There was a rich brown-skinned doll called Maeva in the Our Generation aisle, among the 20+ white dolls. I took a photo to show my daughters. They’ll be ecstatic that Maeva has color, and that you don’t have to wonder if it’s just the sun. They’ll probably notice her hair is pin straight, which isn’t like theirs. They’ll note she’s alone as well. They will, however, take note of the fact that they were heard and, hopefully, that they can continue to raise their voices, maybe even louder next time. What are you and your family seeing at your local Target?
