After describing the Western image of God as a “senile delinquent” during one of his sermons in 1940s Mexico, an ex-minister, the Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon, was kicked out of his church. Shannon is not defrocked, but he is sent to a mental hospital due to a “nervous breakdown.” The Rev. Shannon finds work as a tour guide for a second-rate travel agency shortly after his release. Shannon is accused of statutory rape of a 16-year-old teen, Charlotte Goodall, who is accompanying his current party of visitors, just before the play’s opening.

The Night of the Iguana premieres in Puerto Barrio, a town on Mexico’s west coast. The play is set on the verandah of Costa Verde, a rustic, bohemian hotel in the middle of a vast jungle. The reader is introduced to Maxine Faulk, the proprietor of the Costa Verde, in the first scene. Faulk is identified at first as a “stout, swanky woman in her middle forties” who recently lost her husband, Fred, to an infection contracted while fishing. Faulk also enjoys casual sex with Pedro, one of her Hispanic workers, despite the fact that her husband died just a few months ago; she still wears provocative clothes around the hotel and is regularly honest about her sexual intentions.
Faulk meets Reverend Larry Shannon, a young man about the age of thirty-five who is often anxious and disheveled, while walking outside at the start of the play. Shannon is currently working for Blake Tours, a company that operates across Mexico and Texas. Shannon, on the other hand, is a borderline bad tour guide, as he veers off the beaten path and engages in sexual activity with young women, especially those under the age of eighteen. When Shannon first sees Faulk, she immediately starts flirting with him and tries to persuade him to stay at the Costa Verde with her; she even advises him to ditch his tour and wear her husband’s old clothes and sleep in his bed. Shannon is apprehensive about remaining at the hotel and abandoning his tour of female teachers at Baptist Female College in Blowing Rock, Texas, despite his desire to return to the priesthood.

T. Lawrence Shannon: Nothing could be worse for a girl in your unstable situation than to be mixed up with a man in, in my unstable situation, because two people in unstable situations are like two nations confronting each other in unstable situations. The destructive potential, eh, could obliterate the entire planet!
T. Lawrence Shannon: I was under the impression you were asexual. But you’ve only recently turned into a woman. Do you have any idea how I know that? Because you want to keep *me* tethered! Both women, whether they believe it or not, want to tie up men in knots.

The plot is as follows: The Rev. T. Lawrence Shannon has been employed as a tourist guide for a low-cost travel agency in Mexico for the past two years. After taking liberties with one of his parishioners, Shannon lost his church and was defrocked. He’s now traveling with a group of Texas middle-aged ladies, led by Judith Fellowes, who is keeping a close eye on her teenage ward, Charlotte Goodall, who has shown an interest in the former priest. Fellowes is out to get Shannon fired after Charlotte and Shannon spend the night together, so Shannon strands them at a remote hotel run by his good friend Maxine Faulk to prevent her from dealing with his boss. The arrival of Hannah Jelkes and her elderly grandfather, on the other hand, has the biggest influence. Shannon is forced to confront his demons and re-evaluate his life as a result of her approach to life and love.
