In October 2011, a controversy erupted over the content of a World History textbook used in district classes that included allegedly anti-Semitic material. The textbook was eventually taken out of the program. In July 2014, The Lion’s Roar, Newton South High School’s student newspaper, accused Superintendent David Fleishman of plagiarizing parts of a Governor Deval Patrick speech without attribution. Two members of the 2014 graduating class made the allegations. The Newton School Committee fined Fleishman one week’s pay of his $250,000 salary after he confessed to failing to cite the governor. The Massachusetts Attorney General determined on December 19, 2014 that the Newton Public Schools and School Committee Chair Matthew Hills had violated the state’s Open Meeting Law eight times in June and July 2014.
[nine] The infractions arose as a result of Newton Superintendent David Fleishman’s plagiarism. Hills received no punishment other than a re-examination of the rules.

The number of choice seats that each district can occupy is limited by the Department of Education. The “maximum number of new choice students that can be enrolled” informs parents of the number of new choice students the district can enroll in the following school year. A lottery will be held if more than the maximum number of applications are submitted, and a waitlist will be established. Even if no seats are currently open, waitlists will be produced for all accepted option grades. NA suggests that for those grades, the district does not allow option applications.
If there are choice seats available in the choice-approved grades/programs and the students meet any program-specific requirements, the district gives preference to choice applicants who have a sibling who is already enrolled in the choice district.
If there are choice seats available in the choice-approved grades/programs and the students meet any program-specific requirements, the district gives priority to choice applicants that have completed the sending district’s terminal grade (i.e., students who enter a choice district with grades that expire before 12th grade and have a natural progression to this choice district).

The result? Accurate comparisons between colleges, school districts, and communities in the same (or different) areas, as well as between schools in different states.
It is well recognized that the standard of education offered by public schools differs significantly from one school district to the next, as well as from one city to the next. Furthermore, within any city or area, the standard of a child’s education can differ significantly from neighborhood to neighborhood.
