Gary D. Schmidt’s young adult historical novel Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy was published by Clarion Books in 2004. In 2005, the book won a Newbery Honor and a Michael L. Printz Honor[1] in the same year.
This novel is set in the year 1912. Turner Buckminster, the son of Reverend Buckminster (Pastor at First Congregational Church in Phippsburg, Maine), has recently relocated from Boston, Massachusetts to Phippsburg, Maine, and is regularly mocked for simple misunderstandings, not to mention being immediately hated by the Phippsburg boys for playing baseball differently. Turner meets a black girl named Lizzie Bright Griffin and befriends her amid his social anxiety. Turner must rescue Lizzie’s family and friends before they are forced to leave or, even worse, are sent to a mental institution in New Gloucester, Maine. But doing so requires defying the authorities, including Turner’s father.
