Music for sleeping

Sleep disorders are a widespread health issue in our society, and they can cause fatigue, depression, and difficulties with daytime functioning. Previous research has shown that brain-wave music produced from electroencephalography (EEG) signals can influence our nervous system emotionally and improve sleep quality. However, the neural mechanisms of brain-wave music’s impact on sleep quality must be elucidated.
Methodologies: A total of 33 young people were recruited and split into three classes at random. For six days, the participants listened to REM brain-wave music (Group 1: 13 subjects), SWS brain-wave music (Group 2: 11 subjects), or white noise (WN) (Control Group: 9 subjects) for 20 minutes before bedtime. Polysomnography was used to record EEG and other physiological signals.
Results: In the SWS group, sleep efficiency improved, but in the REM and WN groups, it decreased. Sleep performance was improved in the SWS community [t(10) = 1.943, p = 0.076]. The delta power spectral density in the REM and control groups increased in the EEG power spectral density study, while it decreased in the SWS group [F(2,31) = 7.909, p = 0.005]. The functional connectivity (FC) between the left frontal lobe (F3) and left parietal lobe (C3) in the SWS community decreased [t(10) = 1.969, p = 0.073] in the network study, as measured by Pearson correlation coefficients. Furthermore, in the SWS community, there was a negative association between the FC of the left frontal and left parietal lobe and sleep latency (r = 0.527, p = 0.064).
