Literary modernism, also known as modernist literature, emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, mostly in Europe and North America, and is defined by a deliberate break from conventional writing styles in both poetry and prose fiction. Ezra Pound’s slogan, “Make it fresh,” exemplified Modernism’s experimentation with literary type and language. [1] A deliberate effort to overthrow conventional forms of representation and express the modern sensibilities of their time drove this literary revolution. [2] After the horrors of World War I, existing ideas about culture were reassessed,[3], and much modernist literature deals with the technical advancements and cultural changes of modernity as it moved into the twentieth century.
In the 1880s, more emphasis was placed on the notion that, rather than simply revising past experience in light of contemporary techniques, it was important to fully ignore previous norms. Early Modernist literature was inspired by the theories of Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) and Ernst Mach (1838–1916). In The Science of Mechanics, Ernst Mach proposed that the mind had a fundamental structure and that subjective perception was dependent on the interplay of parts of the mind (1883). Studies on Hysteria (co-authored with Josef Breuer) was Freud’s first major work (1895). All subjective truth, according to Freud, is based on the interaction of basic drives and instincts, through which the outside world is viewed. Ernst Mach was a significant influence on logical positivism as a philosopher of science, and through his critique of Isaac Newton, a forerunner of Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity.

The last few decades have finally made the requisite room for women writers to write – and then re-write – a modern literary canon, after being left out for so long that even masters like George Eliot and Jane Austen were forced to adopt male pseudonyms or obscure their names.
As we approach International Women’s Day, we asked our readers to tell us about great books by women that they enjoy reading, sharing, and recommending to others. The result is a brilliantly diverse collection of classics and contemporary masterpieces that anyone who enjoys great fiction – as well as nonfiction, memoirs, poetry, and more – can appreciate.
Yrsa Daley-Ward – author, model, and activist – tells the moving and tragic story of how a childhood spent in the north-west of England developed into an adulthood in which she discovered the strength and fear of sexuality in this award-winning memoir.
We said: This cerebral bestseller follows a group of quirky misfits at a prestigious university who cross moral boundaries and must then live with the consequences. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author delivers an engrossing read.
