When chromosomes fail to differentiate during mitosis or meiosis, the number of chromosomes in daughter cells is incorrect. Nondisjunction is a condition that is often caused by a lapse in the mitotic checkpoint. If nondisjunction occurs during meiosis, the resulting egg or sperm cell will have an incorrect number of chromosomes, and the fetus will have a chromosomal abnormality if fertilized. Aneuploidy is the term for possessing an odd number of chromosomes. Trisomy, which occurs when there are three copies of a chromosome instead of two, is a common form of aneuploidy. The table below lists some common chromosomal abnormalities. Down syndrome, which exists on chromosome 21, is the most common trisomy that a person can undergo.
Doctors use a karyotype, which is a map of the chromosomes, to diagnose chromosomal abnormalities. Each chromosome pair is laid out side by side, making it relatively easy to spot any discrepancies. Each chromosome pair is present and of relatively equal length, as can be seen in the karyotype below. The last chromosome pair (23) is numbered X/Y; these are the only two chromosomes that do not match exactly.

We were needed to observe and recognize mitosis in onion root tip and whitefish cells, measure the distance of genes from the centromere, estimate the time of mitotic stages, stimulate the stages of meiosis using chromosome sets, and observe and recognize mitosis in onion root tip and whitefish cells during this lab. These exercises helped us understand the distinctions between mitosis and meiosis, as well as how genetic variation is caused by chromosome crossing over.
We searched for different stages of mitosis in onion root tip cells and whitefish cells (Activity A) under a microscope at different magnification levels to observe and identify mitosis. We drew and colored an image of each cell while studying it so that we could have a realistic picture in our notes. We defined the stages of mitosis we were seeing at the magnification we drew the cells at in both drawings. We mentioned what happened during interphase underneath the drawings. Following that, we answered questions and defined terms related to plant and animal mitosis, as well as what happens during mitosis. This activity appealed to me because we were able to see the stages of mitosis in plants (onions) and animals (whitefish) through our own eyes rather than through photographs. It also appealed to me because it required us to locate the stages and differentiate between them based on their appearance.
