Regent Lee, a native of Austin, earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1971. He is a licensed practicing engineer in the state of California. Regent Lee is a Hall-of-Fame member of the Mechanical Engineering Academy of Distinguished Alumni and a life member of the Texas Exes.
Regent Lee was the CEO of CPS Energy, the nation’s largest municipally operated natural gas and electric utility, which serves more than 750,000 customers in and around San Antonio, when he retired in 2010. He became senior vice president of Electric Transmission and Distribution Systems at CPS in 2000.
He founded the consultancy firm Lee Energy Partners, LLC, in 2010 after a distinguished career in the electric utility industry. He advises clients on electric and gas industry issues. He has also taught Corporate Strategy at the University of Idaho’s Utility Executive Course.
Regent Lee worked as COO, CEO, and general manager of Austin (Texas) Energy in the 1990s before joining CPS. He began his career at GE before joining the newly formed Texas Utility Commission (TUC) in 1976, where he was responsible for electric utility regulation in the areas of infrastructure, design, transmission, and distribution systems. He served as an expert witness in licensing and rate cases, as well as writing laws and regulations for the state’s electric utilities.
