Fortunately, no, but a health scare that my Grandma Frances went through had a major impact on me. She was diagnosed with end-stage heart disease when I was a child and was sent home to die. At the age of 65, she had had so many bypass operations that her life was nearly over. She did, however, happened to catch an episode of 60 Minutes featuring Nathan Pritikin, who run a clinic in California and claimed to be able to help people reclaim their lives through diet and lifestyle changes. She wanted to fly around the country to see him and made a remarkable recovery. She was walking 10 miles a day after just a few weeks! She lived another 31 years, getting to spend time with her six grandchildren, including me. She was included in Pritikin’s biography as one of his first success stories. “They wheeled her in, but she walked out!” was how one of the people was identified.
