Students in Minnesota are eligible to take the MCA in grades 3 through 8, as well as in high school. The Reading test is given in grades 3-8 and then again in 10th grade, while the Math test is required in grades 3-8 and 11.
The level of difficulty for the next passage set is determined by a student’s answers to questions about a passage on the Reading test. The response to each question on the Mathematics exam helps decide the next question a student will be asked.

MCA (Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments) are statewide evaluations given to Minnesota students with the goal of determining how well they are meeting Minnesota’s academic standards as well as state and federal requirements. The MCA test is used by teachers and parents to assess which areas of a student’s performance are strong and which areas need to be addressed for change. The results of this evaluation are communicated with the appropriate stakeholders for the purpose of evaluating individual student success. Students who receive special education services undergo an alternative evaluation called the Minnesota Test of Academic Skills (MTAS).
Reading, arithmetic, and science are all included in MCA. Students in grades 3–8 take the literacy exam, grades 3–8 and 11 take the mathematics test, and grades 5, 8 and high school students take the MCA science test (only once). These MCAs are all different.
After the passage of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2001, Minnesota’s statewide appraisal standards received a significant boost. This law mandated the state to develop academic quality requirements, a metric for the standards, and a student assessment system.

The MCA-IIIs (Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments Series III) are reading, mathematics, writing, and science exams that help schools and districts track students’ progress toward the state’s academic standards. MCAs are used in the following situations: The Graduation-Required Assessment for Diploma (GRAD) assesses high school students’ reading, writing, and math skills. To earn a high school diploma, students must achieve a certain amount on any of these exams or take one of the following tests: ACT, WorkKeys, Compass, or Armed Forces Exam. The reading test is given in tenth grade, and the math test is given in eleventh. Students will retake all of these exams three times a year and four times in 12th grade if necessary. ELLS HAVE ACCESS— Minnesota has joined the WIDA Consortium (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment). Minnesota schools will administer the ACCESS for ELLs assessment to all Limited English Proficient (LEP) listed students in grades K–12 as part of the WIDA consortium. Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-by-State for English Language Learners (ACCESS for ELLs) is an acronym for Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-by-State for English Language Learners. This large-scale evaluation focuses on academic English language proficiency (ELP) requirements, which are at the heart of the WIDA Consortium’s approach to teaching and assessing English language learners.

Minnesota schools can administer the ACCESS for ELLs® assessment to all students classified as Limited English Proficient (LEP) in grades K–12. The ACCESS for ELLs® will take the place of the Test of Emerging Academic English (TEAE) and the Minnesota Student Oral Language Observation Matrix (MN SOLOM) in meeting the Title III standard for evaluating English language proficiency beginning in the spring of 2012. The four levels of achievement on the Minnesota Academic Standards are defined by Achievement Level Descriptors (ALDs). ALDs from the Individual Student Reports for reading, mathematics, science, and English learner tests are given here, developed by panels of Minnesota teachers. The alternative tests, the Minnesota Test of Academic Skills (MTAS) and the MCA-Modified, have ALDs that reflect a reduction in the scope, width, and sophistication of the academic standards.
