the big picture The Massachusetts Bar Exam takes two days to complete. The Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) is administered in Massachusetts. Day 1 The first day consists of a three-hour session with six Multistate Essay Exam (“MEE”) questions and a three-hour session with two Multistate Performance Test (“MPT”) objects. Each MEE question takes about 30 minutes to answer, and each MPT object takes about 90 minutes. On the second day of the Massachusetts bar exam, the MBE is administered. The MBE is a 200-question multiple-choice test. The MBE is divided into two parts: morning and afternoon. There are 100 questions in each session. Each session will take three hours to complete.
A minimum score of 270 is required to pass the Massachusetts bar exam. On a scale of one to twenty, this equals a score of 135 on a 200-point scale. The MBE is 50 percent weighted, the MEE questions are 30 percent weighted, and the MPT objects are 20 percent weighted. Massachusetts publishes bar exam reports on a regular basis. The results of the Massachusetts bar exam are available 8 to 9 weeks after the February exam and 13 to 14 weeks after the July exam.

When you graduate from law school, you most likely already know where you want to practice. Since you will be taking the bar exam in that state, this is a significant decision to make. The bar exam’s difficulty varies by state; some states’ exams are significantly more rigorous than others, with lower pass rates.
A professor at Pepperdine School of Law, Robert Anderson, used statistics to figure out which states had the most difficult bar exams. Anderson analyzed the bar passage rate of each American Bar Association-accredited law school for 2010-2011, as well as each school’s median undergraduate GPA and LSAT, according to the website Above the Law.
Anderson used regression analysis, a statistical tool for quantifying data, with each school’s bar exam test takers weighted. He used this data to classify the top ten schools with the most challenging bar exams. He discovered that the most challenging exam was in California, followed by Arkansas, Washington, Louisiana, and Nevada. The outcomes are listed further down.

On a scale of 0 to 7, each essay question is graded. The raw essay score is then scaled to match the MBE score. The cumulative bar exam scaled score is calculated by adding the essay scaled score and the MBE scaled score.
A composite scaled score of 270 is the minimum passing score. The essay exam and the MBE both have no minimum passing grade. A higher score on one section of the exam may be enough to make up for a bad result on the other. The results of the February bar exam are mailed around May 15th, and the results of the July bar exam are mailed around November 15th.
The Board will re-read the essay exams of those applicants whose total combined score is between 265 and 270 before the bar exam results become final. The sum of the re-graded scores and the original score can be higher or lower than the original score. There will be no more regrading or appeals.
