The Martin Luther King Jr. Award for Community Service honors members of the Johns Hopkins community who have shown a strong dedication to volunteerism. This award is open to nominations from all professors, staff, and graduate students.
The award is open to all university and health system faculty, staff, and graduate students, as well as people who are routinely assigned to work at Hopkins by associated organizations. Members of the Martin Luther King Jr. nomination review committees, executive committee, and celebration committee are ineligible to participate.
Anyone can nominate anyone who has donated their time and resources to help others in the year 2020. Previous award winners are eligible for re-nomination five years after their initial award. Nominations from the public are acknowledged. All nominations must be made using the form given below.
The nomination review panels will focus their decisions on the nominee’s voluntary community service achievements and the effect of the service on the local community. Panels will recognize the nominee’s unique attributes as well as his or her resourcefulness when doing community service. The frequency of the operation as well as the duration of the service will be taken into account. Local community service will be given preference, but committees will still consider service done elsewhere.

The MLK Diversity Awards recognize individuals who exemplify Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s spirit by demonstrating a dedication to diversity and inclusion. This year’s initiative recognizes 11 individuals and groups, including students, who are working to realize Dr. King’s dream.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was introduced to Joseph Delgardo as a freshman at Northeastern University shortly after he finished speaking at the Roxbury Church in Boston. Joseph made a promise to live his life in service to others after hearing Dr. King speak. He has devoted his time and resources to registering people to vote in Arizona. Thousands of people have signed up for his activities at ASU, including the Aloha Festival, Salute to Service events, Juneteenth, and the AGC Collectors Club of Arizona.
Joseph was recently named to Arizona’s African American Affairs Commission. He has aided in the formation of potential leaders by inviting over 500 middle and high school students to learn about state government at the Arizona State Capitol.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards were created in 1999 by Jim Daniels, Director of the Creative Writing Program. Daniels’ dedication to writing about race is reflected in the program (he edited Letters to America: Contemporary American Poetry on Race). In 2001, the event was extended to include a separate category for Carnegie Mellon students, based on the idea that college students’ voices, as well as their diverse perspectives, could and should engage with young voices from the Pittsburgh community. Personal narratives on race are expressly requested in the contest guidelines. We believe that by learning each other’s stories, we can begin to break down barriers. We start to see each other as individual human beings, struggling to live good lives and treat each other decently, as we all do. We are all members of various cultures, and we reach out and cross over in strange and sometimes unexpected ways. Both of these groups will come together thanks to the King Writing Awards. The winners of this contest read to an audience of hundreds in the University Center’s main lecture hall as part of the University’s day-long program of panel discussions and performing arts presentations.
