The Babylonian tablets described earlier are the earliest specimens discovered that are undeniably depictions of land features; some land drawings found in Egypt and paintings discovered in early tombs are nearly as ancient. It’s quite likely that these two cultures evolved their mapping abilities at about the same time and in similar directions. Both were keenly interested in the fertile areas of their river valleys and, as a result, surveys and plats were almost certainly made soon after settled communities were founded. They later created plats for the building of canals, bridges, and temples, which are today’s equivalent of engineering plans.
The Earth is depicted as a disk surrounded by water, with Babylon at its middle, on a tablet discovered in Iraq. Apart from this specimen, which dates from about 1000 BCE, there seem to have been few attempts by Babylonians and Egyptians to depict the shape and extent of the entire Earth. Their mapmaking was based on more realistic considerations, such as establishing boundaries. Speculations and observations about the existence of the Earth did not begin to take shape until the time of the Greek philosopher-geographers.
