Bratislava’s black madonna
Two tall and shorter finials flank either side of the throne. The space between them is described by the throne’s straight arms and sides. It’s a chair with a semi-circular shape. The artist was unable to correctly depict the chair’s perspective. Above is a 12th century image of Christ on a curved wooden throne with two archangels from Sinai, and below is a 12th century icon of the Theotokos and Christ on a curved wooden throne from Sinai. Above, you can see how the Virgin’s face was painted up with blue paint in this close-up. This was achieved below the nose and around the edges. On the tops of the noses, two strange patches were painted. On the left side of the lips, a slight shadow was applied. Take a look at how the pupils are rendered as dramatic ovals.
The National Gallery in Washington, D.C. houses two prominent Byzantine icons. The “Mellon Madonna” is smaller than the “Kahn Madonna,” its sister symbol. Theokotos and Christ are sitting on a wood throne that has been adorned with a pillow in the Mellon icon. On a footstool, the Virgin’s feet are mounted. The figures’ poses are inspired by the famous Hodegetria icon, which the Byzantines thought was painted by St. Luke. While the Virgin gazes at her Son, Christ gazes at the viewer. In Byzantium, enthroned icons of the Virgin and Child were very common, and they came in a variety of styles and postures, as well as thrones and chairs. The Theotokos and Child are depicted as members of a celestial court with Archangels in attendance in this Imperial icon. In the 12th century, versions of this icon with Archangels in red medallions were extremely common and were exported across Christian Europe. Many examples have made it to the present day. Byzantine Emperors gave icons like this as gifts to friends and allies. They were also sent to Catholic monks, temples, and monasteries in the West by Patriarchs. Thousands of icons were exported each year as luxury Byzantine pieces by art merchants. We have no information about how the Mellon and Khan icons arrived in Spain in 1912 and were sold on the art market. Before that, they may have been there for hundreds of years.

Madonna and child
A Madonna (Italian: [madn.na]) is a depiction of Mary, either by herself or with her child Jesus. Both the Catholic and Orthodox churches use these symbols as key icons. 1st The term comes from the Italian ma donna, which means “my lady.”
The Madonna and Child type is very common in Christian iconography, and it is divided into several traditional subtypes, particularly in Eastern Orthodox iconography. It is sometimes named after the location of a prominent icon of the type, such as the Theotokos of Vladimir, Agiosoritissa, Blachernitissa, and so on, or after the depicted pose, as in Hodegetria, Eleusa, and so on.
The word Madonna, in the sense of “image or statue of the Virgin Mary,” first appears in English in the 17th century, often in reference to Italian Renaissance works. Such images are commonly referred to as Theotokos in Eastern Orthodox circles. The term “Madonna” refers to images in which Mary, with or without the infant Jesus, is the focal point and central figure of the painting, flanked or surrounded by angels or saints. Other forms of Marian imagery, such as those portraying scenes from the Virgin’s life, such as the Annunciation to Mary, are not usually referred to as “Madonna.”
