The little rock nine (powerpoint presentation)

In reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education, the NAACP chose nine African American students to try to integrate Little Rock’s all-white Central High School. President Eisenhower ordered the 101st Airborne to escort the students into campus after the governor and crowds of segregationists stopped them from attending. But what was it like for students once they got to school? In this lesson, students review five documents to learn about one student’s experiences in desegregating Central High School, Minnijean Brown.

First, we’ll go through my powerpoint presentation as a class and hear a bit about each of the Little Rock Nine members. We’ll talk about what happened and how it relates to what we heard about Brown vs. Board of Education last week. After the questions and comments have been answered, I will divide the class into two or three groups of two or three students. Each group will create a mini biography for one of the Little Rock Nine students. Each biography should include a photo of their preferred member, either drawn or photocopied. It should also provide information about where they were born, important details about black desegregation, life after Central High School, and how they are currently assisting the world. Below are links to my powerpoint presentation as well as another resource where you may be able to learn more about your chosen member. For more details, consult encyclopedias, other internet resources, and our textbook. We’ll show the biographies to the class after they’re done and go through the details we discovered. Finally, as we did last week, we’ll look at the Canterbury Female Boarding School and see if we can find any further gaps between the North and the South. We’ll also compare and contrast the two campuses, highlighting similarities and differences. After that, we’ll answer some questions and go over the answers after reading two passages.
