Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in New Bedford, along with five other schools throughout the Commonwealth, was honored for its sustainable “green” design elements. The school was one of five in the Commonwealth to be recognized as a green learning area by the “Green Schools Organization.” Mayor Mitchell presented the award to the Lincoln School today, highlighting the building’s energy-efficient design features as well as sustainability initiatives introduced in other school buildings throughout the district.
“While there are many costs that government incurs that are beyond our control, this project demonstrates that with only a little bit of effort, we can dramatically reduce the cost of heat and energy that we consume,” Mayor Mitchell said.
Daedalus Projects Inc., MVG Architects, and their consulting team collaborated with the City of New Bedford to design and create a school that provides students with a 21st Century learning atmosphere. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade attend the 93,833 square foot elementary school. There’s an auditorium, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, a library/media center, classrooms, and a sports area with a synthetic turf field and a resilient track. The facility is equipped with high-efficiency systems and meets or exceeds all Massachusetts Collaborative for High Performance Schools standards.
